GEAR UP is offering the opportunity for GEAR UP students to register for US 103 and WRIT 101 with other GEAR UP and TRIO students! Contact our office or you academic advisor if you are intersted in taking one of these courses. More infomation provided in the following sections!

2021 Backpack and school supply event

Backpack and School Supplies

August 17th at the Parent/Family Send-Off Dinner
Students who are starting their first semester at MSU in the GEAR UP Program will be provided with FREE backpacks and a variety of school supplies! Students attending the Parent/Family Send-Off Dinner on Wednesday, August 17th as part of the Smart Start Welcome Program will receive their backpack and school supplies there. Those unable to attend the dinner can pick theirs up in the GEAR UP office beginning Monday, August 22nd. 
Fall Semester Kickoff to be held on August 25th

Fall Semester Kick-Off

August 25th from 5-7pm in SUB Ballroom A

All GEAR UP students (Freshmen through Graduate students) are invited to a Fall semester Kickoff event on Thursday, August 25th from 5-7 pm. Come enjoy some food, games, and get to know other GEAR UP and TRIO students. Let's get the Fall semester kicked off successfully! RSVP on CatsConnect!

Parent Family Weekend

September 30th and October 1st
The Bobcat Parent and Family Program puts together a Parent Family Weekend each year that fosters a great environment for students and their families to visit them shortly into the the start of the semester. GEAR UP MSU will fund registration for 
2022 New student Ryanne Briere and her Mother
MSU New Student Orientations were held in July. Incoming students spent two and a half days on campus learning about programs and services and registering for Fall semester courses.  GEAR UP MSU was happy to fund students' and parent(s)' Orientation registration fees and on-campus lodging. Pictured at right is GEAR UP student Ryanne Briere and her mom Wendy, who attended New Student Orientation July 11-13th. 

GEAR UP and TRIO Student Support Services is now offering a section of US 103 and WRIT 101!

As your advisor about this opportunity or contact the GEAR UP or TRIO office to learn more about how to be registered for these courses.

US 103

This course will be offered on Wednesdays from 2:10-3:00pm. Section 12 is especialy for GEAR UP and TRIO students and will include concepts that will teach the basics of college and how to succeed. 

WRIT 101

This course will be offered Mondays, Wednesdays,and Fridays from 1:10-2:00pm and will be taught by Kara Lapp.

Meet Kara Lapp

Kara is a first-generation college graduate with a B.A. in English Literature, an M.A. in English, and is a second-year Ph.D. student. She is excited to teach a cohort of GEAR UP and TRIO students this fall! She understands some of the challenges of being the first person in a family to attend college. From a low-income, blue-collar background, she is also familiar with students with disabilities, both in the classroom and at home. Kara looks forward to working with GEAR UP and TRIO and setting students up for a successful writing experience at Montana State University.
