Man and woman in professional attire
First impressions count! You have heard the saying “there is no second chance to make a first impression.” That is never more true than in an interview situation.

When you meet someone, whether you realize it or not, you are making an assessment of them usually within the first 30 seconds. Likewise, they are making an assessment of you. Humans are very visual by nature, and how you look is a critical factor in that first impression. To make a positive first impression keep these tips in mind.

  • Your clothing should fit well, be clean and pressed (no wrinkles)
  • Men should wear dress pants, a button-down shirt, a tie in more conservative situations, and consider a jacket in more formal situations
  • Women should wear dress pants or a knee length skirt, blouse, or sweater-set, and close-toed shoes
  • Keep jewelry and make-up understated and to a minimum
  • Avoid wearing perfume, cologne, scented body lotions, etc.
  • Carry personal items in a small purse or brief case. Backpacks are NOT appropriate.

Dress the Part Tip: When in doubt, dress "up." Go more conservative than less; go more formal than less. Being over-dressed is not a detriment; being UNDER dressed is!
