Fertility and Management of Malting Barley
Dylan Mangel: MS Candidate
Problem Statement:
- Barley malt quality is highly dependent on weather and management decisions.
Purpose and Objectives:
- Determine how management decisions and environment effect malt quality.
Hypothesis:
- With modified management decisions and the implementation of novel genes, malt quality can be maintained under poor growing conditions.
Montana malting barley makes up over 30% of nationwide production. However, rejection rates are highly dependent on weather. My research is in testing how management decisions and a novel drought tolerance allele can help maintain malt quality under imperfect growing conditions.
