Dylan Mangel: MS Candidate

Problem Statement:

  • Barley malt quality is highly dependent on weather and management decisions.

Purpose and Objectives:

  • Determine how management decisions and environment effect malt quality.

Hypothesis:

  • With modified management decisions and the implementation of novel genes, malt quality can be maintained under poor growing conditions.
Dylan at the Post Farm research plots

Montana malting barley makes up over 30% of nationwide production. However, rejection rates are highly dependent on weather. My research is in testing how management decisions and a novel drought tolerance allele can help maintain malt quality under imperfect growing conditions.
