NIR - Near Infra Red
MSU Equipment: Foss Infratec 1241 Grain Analyzer - outfitted with both barley and malt calibrations
Near Infrared (NIR) Analysis
-This is a rapid and non-destructive method for determining grain/malt moisture and protein
-The transmitance of light in the near infrared range (850-1050nm) is measured when passed over grain in a cuvette
-Predictions are based on calibrations developed from spectral libraries
A spectral library contains NIR values paired with the bench determination of protein and moisture for about 30,000 lines
This calibration includes lines which are genetically diverse and from geographically diverse locations in order to be robust

A cuvette is filled with un-malted or malted barley
The cuvette is placed inside the machine for measurement
