The Wool Lab’s primary functions include research, service and education. To help meet these goals, an Optical Fibre Diameter Analyser was purchased from Australia. This instrument quickly and accurately measures fiber diameter and is one of only two used by wool research labs in the U.S. With the continued backing of the Montana sheep industry, the Montana Wool Lab strives to improve wool quality while educating students, growers and the public on the economical and environmental benefits of sheep. The Wool Lab is the last frame building on campus.

The Montana Wool Laboratory was established by the sheep producers of Montana to serve the sheep industry. Through their efforts, the Montana Legislature approved funding for the building and equipment in 1945 and construction was completed in 1947. In the early days, the lab supplied basic information for selling wool based on its merits.
