Common Reactions to Tragic Events
Everyone reacts to tragic events differently. In light of the recent attacks on our nation, the following feelings and reactions are common:
- Sadness
- Shock or numbness
- Nervousness, fear, feeling "vulnerable"
- Anger, irritability
- Questioning life and death, asking "WHY?"
- Feeling helpless
- Guilt or a desire to "do something"
- Preoccupation with event, need to talk about it
- A desire to be with others or to withdraw
- Dreams or nightmares of event
- Loss of appetite
- Insomnia or sleeping too much
- Difficulty concentrating
- Headaches, nausea, fatigue
- Having memories or reactions to past traumas or losses
Coping Strategies:
- Talking about it
- Trying to maintain your daily routine
- Exercise
- Eating regular, heatlhy meals
- Getting plenty of sleep
