Here are your Monday Minutes for the week of August 24-28, 2020.

Please make a point of reading this email every Monday (or Tuesday), as it highlights key department announcements, opportunities, and events, particularly events hosted by one of the Department of Education’s student clubs. It covers everything you need to know in a single email message.

Dear Staff, Faculty, and Students, 

We made it through the first week of the semester! Last week, we started new ways of teaching. Some face to face classes met outside, and blended and online classes are running smoothly. Give yourself a hearty congratulations, as we are in uncharted territory. 

On Thursday, August 27, 7:30pm, we will welcome Sarah Vowell, Bozeman High School and MSU graduate, for our virtual convocation. Sarah will also work with university seminar courses this semester. This event is sure to be inspirational, funny, and energizing!

From the Advising Office

  • The Education Advising Center is currently offering a mix of in-person and remote advising options. We’re planning in small increments to allow us to adapt to changing conditions, so the following is our schedule through Friday, August 28
    • In-Person Walk-In Hours: Monday and Thursday, 9:30-11:30 am; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 1:30-3:30 pm; Reid 123 (down the hall from the Education Advising Center). Please note that we may continue to scale back in-person hours and prioritize availability for remote appointments as the semester continues.
    • Phone or Webex Appointments: M-F, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, as available. You can schedule appointments at www.montana.edu/education/advising/calendars.html.
    • And, as always, you can contact us via email or phone. We’re available to respond during normal business hours (M-F, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm).
  • The last day to drop a class online is Friday, August 28.
  • The last day to add a class with an add/drop form is Friday, August 28.
  • The Center for Bilingual and Multicultural Education in Reid 418 is open M-Th 9am-3pm for students, staff and faculty. The Center offers a safe and socially-distanced space for students to collaborate and receive support. See the attached flyer for scheduled CBME programming.

From the Office of Field Placement and Licensure

  • Fingerprint Clinic/Background Checks: The Field Placement & Licensure office with the University Police Department (UPD) has partnered to hold a fingerprint clinic August 26th – August 28th, 11:00am – 4:00pm (all days). Due to COVID-19, UPD has requested only scheduled appointments for the fingerprint clinic to control the number of students in the facility. UPD is not doing fingerprints except during the clinic. 
    • Students will need to sign-up for the fingerprint clinic via MSU Box and should receive an invite from their instructor as well as a link to a video and instructions on how to access MSU Box. Appointments are in 10 minute increments with two spots for each time slot. Registration instructions are attached and also available in video form at https://montana.techsmithrelay.com/f2IW.
    • Students should bring the following with them to the clinic:
      • Government issued ID (driver license, passport, or state ID)
      • Fingerprint card filled out
      • Check or money order for $10.00 (made out to MSU), or cash, to get fingerprints done
      • Background check paperwork (Forms: NCPA/VCA, Applicant Rights and Consent to Fingerprint, MSU Consent and Release)
      • Check or money for $25.00 made out to Criminal Records to have background check processed by the Department of Justice.
    • ***MASKS ARE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FINGERPRINT CLINIC***
    • Additionally, if a student is attending MSU solely online, we ask that s/he requests for us to mail a fingerprint/background check packet to them.  Otherwise, the info on the fingerprint card will be incorrect. A return envelope will be sent with the packet so students do not have to pay for postage.
    • If a student is unable to attend the fingerprint clinic, the Gallatin County Detention Center will fingerprint by appointment only.  Students can call, 406-582-2130 (option #5), to schedule an appointment. 
    • Fingerprint packets are located in the hallway outside of Reid Hall 247.
  • CPR/1st Aid Certification: Students who have applied for spring 2021 student teaching are required to be certified in CPR/1st Aid for adult and child.  There are a few locations in Bozeman where students can schedule a class:
  • Spring 2021 Student Teaching Interviews & Final File Reviews: The application deadline for spring 2021 student teaching closed August 15th. Teacher candidates can anticipate receiving information within the few weeks. 
    • The CPR/1st Aid certification, GPA Content Area Calculator, and fingerprint/background checks are due at the time of teacher candidate’s virtual final file review—which is mid-to-late September—with our Licensure Technician, Rosemary Madero. If you are unable to complete the CPR/1st Aid certification class by the final file review due to courses not offered until after, please register for the course and provide Rosemary with a copy of the registration. In the meantime, we ask teacher candidates to email the CPR/1st Aid certification and GPA Content Area Calculator to her, [email protected], prior to the file review. Fingerprint/background check paperwork can be dropped off outside of Reid Hall 247, or, if attending the fingerprint clinic Rosemary will be there to collect the paperwork at that time.

Work/Volunteer Opportunities

  • MSU Child Development Center is looking for teacher assistants (10-20 hours/week). MSU CDC is a community-based preschool program serving families with children ages 3-5. We operate as a year-long program with a two-week break in December, a break in August, and are closed for other typical holidays. Student aides can but are not required to work over the summer months and university closures. During the summer months students can also increase to 40 hour/weeks if they wish. This position will assist teachers with all classroom areas and provide a nurturing and educational environment for the children.   • Bozeman Parks & Recreation is hiring seasonal and year-round recreation leaders: Both positions pay $13.00/hr. Position summary is attached, with more info below.
    • Temporary/Seasonal: In this role, you will organize, implement, and evaluate out of school time education/recreation programs for K-5th grade children in our community and also assist children with remote learning throughout the day. You will need to be creative and inventive under the guidelines and to ensure community participation and satisfaction of the attendees.  Perform directly related work as required.     • Permanent: The principal function of an employee in this class is to organize, implement, evaluate and market quality recreation program and events for people of all ages and abilities.  The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.  The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, City officials, community and neighborhood organizations and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in various recreational settings, both indoors and outdoors.
