2020-2021 4-H Member Enrollment

About half of last year’s members have enrolled so far this year so. If you haven’t signed up yet please get signed up soon.  

4-H enrollment this year is with Zsuite (4h.zsuite.org). You will need to sign up using the same email and password you used with 4honline. If you are unsure of which address you used, please call the Extension office.

Zsuite is accessible from any device that has internet access. If you are not able to pull up the website from your phone, try clearing cache and deleting history from google or safari.

Be sure to check out the record book feature.  

I'm hoping to send a project book order in by mid November so please let me know if you need a project book for this year. The Liberty County 4-H Council and your club share the cost of required manuals, fifty/fifty. Any supplemental resource books can be ordered at the member’s expense.  

Shooting Sports is coming soon! If you signed up for shooting sports this year check your e-mail for information about the new season. Wilbur-Ellis is generously allowing the use of their building for shooting sports again this year.

Tiber 4-H Halloween

Tiber 4-H members got together at the Extension office to stuff goody bags. They will be passing them out at the“Trunk or Treat” event downtown on Halloween.

4-H Club Financials Records Due

All Clubs must turn in their Treasurer’s records to the Extension office by November 13. Organizational Leaders need to review all records prior to turning in.  The review is for the 4-H year from October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020. The "Year End Financial Summary Report" can be found on the state 4-H website. It can either be printed off and turned inor saved and emailed to [email protected] to.  It does need to be signed by both the treasurer and the Organizational leader.

New Leaders

2021 Montana 4-H Calendar  

The 2021 Greytak calendars are here.  As usual, the calendars contain beautifully illustrated prints by Don Greytak. The cost of each calendar is $15.00.  This includes 3 raffle tickets for a chance to win a pair of western boots from Murdochs. Proceeds go to the Liberty County 4-H Council so please spread the word. These make great Christmas gifts so call the office to reserve yours.  

Beef Market Animal Livestock Weigh-ins

Liberty County’s Beef weigh-in will be on December 5th at the County Stockyard at 9:00.  

Members must be 10 years old as of October 1, 2020 in order to take a steer to the Marias Fair. You must enroll for your livestock projects by December 1, 2020 Contact Jesse at 759-5625 or on his cell at 406-399-2092 for more information regarding weigh-ins or if this date will not work for you in which case an earlier date would have to be arranged.  

4-H Steer Selection

There are lots of things to consider when choosing a 4-H steer. Here are a few suggestions.

  • One of the most important things to consider is disposition. If you aren’t able to handle your animal, it won’t matter how it looks.
  • The average steer will be finished between 14 and 18 months of age so are generally born between January and May. The fair books state that “animals must be born after January 1 of the prior year.”
  • The animal you choose should be structurally sound with its feet and legs in good shape. Muscling should be looked at as well. How wide they walk when viewed from behind is a good indicator of muscling, and thickness over the top. The frame size of the animal should also be considered.
  • Weight is also important. “Weight per day of age” is a good indicator of the future growth potential of the steer. However, the heaviest calf may not be the best. Study the calf and decide the composition of the extra pounds. Excessive fat in a yearling is not good either. Keep in mind that the minimum weight for a steer at the Marias Fair is 1100 pounds. Typically, members choose animals weighing at least 650 lbs. to 700 lbs. A good average daily gain to shoot for would be around 2 to 2.5 lbs.
