4-H Visual Arts Show

Competition is for any youth 4-H age 5-18. The 4-H Age is youth’s age on October 1. All entries must be dropped off on the day of the competition from 4-4:30 PM with an Artist Statement accompanying each entry (see Contest Information, #2 below).

Contest Information

1. Each member can enter up to 1 project in every category, which include:
   1. Photography: a photograph using any (4-H appropriate) subject matter.
   2. 2-D Art: a two-dimensional project using any medium/materials with any (4-H appropriate) subject matter.
   3. 3-D Open: a three-dimensional project using any medium/materials and any (4-H appropriate) subject matter.
   4. Challenge (see email or newsletter for this year's theme): any 2-D or 3-D project that is made with the intention of incorporating or expressing the theme.

2. All Entries must be accompanied by a one page Artist’s Statement that includes the following:
   1. Title of the Art Piece, Artist’s 4-H Age
   2. Put artist’s name on the back of the Artist Statement to keep anonymous for judging. Coordinator will add the child’s name after judging occurs.
   3. A few paragraphs explaining: what is the work’s content (what do you wish viewers to see?), the inspiration for the piece, what materials and techniques were used to create the piece, what personal decisions were made in the planning/producing of the piece (i.e. why did the artist include one material or color and not another?), what you would change (if anything), and what you may have discovered in the process of creating your piece.
   4. The complexity and length of the artist’s statement will be judged in consideration of the artist’s age.

Category Definitions

1. All Photography must match the following guidelines:
   1. The area (height and width) should not exceed 3 feet x 3 feet.
   2. Photos should be either matted, framed or printed on canvas. Black mats (5x7 or 8x10) are available at the Extension Office for purchase.
2. All 2-D projects must match the following guidelines:
   1. The area (height and width) should not exceed 3 feet x 3 feet.
   2. All materials used in the project should not project from the primary surface more than 1/8”. (For example, a paper collage in which all the paper is laying flat is 2-D, while a paper collage with pieces sticking out is 3-D.) A painting done on a canvas board (which has a depth >1/8”) is considered 2-D, as the art remains on a flat surface.
   3. Examples of possible 2-D Projects include: Paintings, Drawings, Comic Strips, Collages, and more. As long as the art surface is flat, you may enter it! Consider the presentation of the art piece. Black mats (5x7 or 8x10) are available at the Extension Office for purchase.
3. All 3-D projects must match the following guidelines:
   1. The width and depth of the project (the space it will take up while sitting on the ground or a table) should not exceed 3 feet x 3 feet.
   2. There is no height limit on 3-D projects except that it must be able to be brought inside through a standard size door (you may tilt/partially disassemble your project to bring it into the gym).
   3. Examples of possible 3-D Projects include: Sculpture (made with any material) and 2-D style projects (see above) transformed/incorporated into a 3-D structure.
4. Challenge must match the following guidelines: Any photograph, 2-D or 3-D project that is made with the intention of incorporating or expressing the theme.
