There is a lot of preparation involved for any travel abroad, and being well-prepared for international travel can make a huge difference in the quality of your adventure on many levels. For maximum benefit, begin your health-related preparations 2 - 6 months in advance if possible.

IF YOU ARE A STUDENT.......
Planning Study Abroad? Traveling with a Faculty-Lead Group? Traveling as part of an MSU-related organization or research project?
(If your travel plans are NOT MSU-related, just for fun, or visiting friends or relatives, see below)
First, check the excellent MSU Office of International Programs (OIP) website: http://www.montana.edu/international/
You will need to attend a Travel Health and Safety Class (required for all MSU-related student travel)
- offered at OIP Predeparture Orientation (PDO)
- offered at other times, 4 - 6 times per semester, at Student Health Partners
- free of charge
- no need to register
- informative one hour long presentation covering current travel health and safety issues

You may need (or just want!) to a get a Physical Exam
- if required for your university abroad
- if required for a visa for your host country
- if you would simply like one before you travel - a great idea!
- available free at Student Health Partners Medical Services although there may be charges for labs, x-rays, vaccinations, prescriptions etc if needed
- An appointment is needed; you may schedule three ways:

- BE SURE TO PLAN IN ADVANCE; appointments book up quickly especially towards the end of the semester

- you may also get with your regular health care provider at home or at a number of other facilities
Consider a Dentist / Dental Hygienist Exam prior to your travels, a great idea no matter what, but especially important if you have any concerns
- excellent and economical care available at MSU Student Health Service Dental Clinic, or see the dentist / hygienist of your choice

You may wish to schedule a Travel Consultation
- covers potential health and safety issues at your destination
- discussion of any health concerns you might have with regard to travel
- review of your immunization record
- updating any vaccinations you might need prior to your travels
- prescriptions for any travel health needs and / or discuss any refill needs
- great idea if you are traveling to developing countries
- highly recommended if you have any chronic (longer-term) illnesses or diseases, including any mental health issues
- Consultation is free but there may be charges for vaccinations and prescriptions if needed
