What is Zoom?

Zoom is an easy-to-use video conferencing platform that provides high definition, interactive collaboration tools, and telephone conferencing, which allows it to be used as a digital classroom. The entire process is live and allows the instructor and presenter to share their presentation and answer questions from students.

Students click on the provided link from their computer, phone, or tablet a few minutes before the class. There are only a few steps involved and they are the same steps each time you join a meeting.

Frequently Asked Questions about Zoom.

How do I join a class in Zoom?

Before each class session begins, you will receive an email reminder with a Zoom invitation from OLLI at MSU. In the email, you will see a link that says “Click here to join Class XXX." Move your cursor to the “click here” and click on it. Every week the class meets, you’ll receive an email with a link to join.

  • A Zoom account isn't required to attend a class session. You can attend a class session using a laptop, desktop, tablet, or smartphone.
  • If you haven’t used Zoom before, allow 15 minutes to set it up before your first use.
  • If you plan to use a laptop or desktop, the first time you click on a link, it will download a free and secure Zoom program to your computer.
  • If you plan to use a tablet or smartphone, you should download the free and secure Zoom application from your application store.
  • For multi-day courses, the Zoom link is the same for each class within that particular course. Otherwise, the Zoom link is unique for each Side Trip Lecture and event.

What equipment do I need to get started?

At the most basic level, all you need to use Zoom is a telephone, such as a smartphone or a landline. However, if you have access to a computer or mobile device, you can use the full capabilities of Zoom. The following equipment will enhance your experience but is not necessary:

1. Web camera

A camera will increase your connection with your instructor and peers by allowing you to see each other face-to-face. If you do not have access to a web camera, you will still see the instructor.

2. Headset with a microphone

A headset with a microphone will allow you hear and be heard more clearly. It does not need to be fancy equipment; it can be the same as the headphones you might use with your phone.

3. Charger

Charging or plugging in your device during class will ensure that you do not have an unexpected power outage interrupting your learning.

Even if you don’t have a webcam or microphone, you can still watch the live class and ask questions by
typing them into the chat box in the program.

Group Presentations: Best Practice

Keep audio muted

Microphones on computers and phones can pick up disruptive background noise such as talking, shuffling paper, keyboard clacking, and phone notifications.

Keep video off

Having fewer cameras on will improve the streaming quality of the presenter.

Type in questions

To minimize disruptions and awkward speaker timing, please keep your audio muted during the program and type questions in the chatbox. Some programs will have opportunities for audio questions at the presenter’s discretion.

Use the “Raise Hand” feature

In situations where the presenter asks for your verbal conversation, click on the button labeled “reactions” and select “raise hand” and wait for the presenter to call on you before unmuting your microphone. You can also click “reactions” again and click “lower hand” if you no longer wish to speak. There are additional reactions to show your approval if desired.

Improve Your Streaming Capability

Try any or all of these tactics:

  • Disconnect all other devices from your Wi-Fi;
  • Sit close to your wi-fi hub and router (unobstructed access);
  • Direct wire into your router;
  • 'Mute’ your camera and/or mute your microphone/audio when not speaking (you can still hear speakers, but they cannot hear you until you ‘unmute’). See best practices above for mic/audio and camera/video images.

Time of Presentation

The “meeting” or presentation may not open until 15 minutes before the event. If you arrive early and do not see a welcome screen or audio, hang tight. It will begin shortly. The host will welcome everyone and provide further instructions and introductions before the presentation or class begins.

Important Reminder

For group presentations and classes, please always “mute” your camera and microphone upon entry (these buttons appear red when muted). You will still hear and see the presentation, but your mic and camera will be off, so we will not see or hear you. This means fewer distractions for all viewers.

Note: In some presentation settings, your mic and camera will be automatically turned off upon entry.

Thank You!

Enjoy your presentation.
