Portrait of a man in a tie posing outdoors.

Dr. Kurt Schnier believes in the power of education to transform lives. Currently the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Budget and Chief Financial Officer at the University of California, Merced, Kurt holds a B.S. in Management Sciences from UC San Diego, an M.A. in Environmental Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Arizona.

Kurt became a professor because he wanted to live a full and meaningful life. As a faculty member at the University of Rhode Island, Georgia State University, and UC Merced, Kurt invested deeply in all three aspects of professorship: teaching, research, service. Kurt knows that hard work should pay off, and he establishes systems and structures that reward effort and achievement. Administrators who do that well are active listeners, transparent communicators, collaborative leaders, and equitable decision-makers.

Kurt designs backwards from strategic priorities, and loves nothing more than to stand up a group to tackle a problem that others consider intractable. At UC Merced, Kurt has developed new budget models, established resource priorities and protocols, secured long-term financial agreements, and built a balanced, inclusive team to lead the Division of Finance and Administration. In additon to his work as Vice Chancellor, Kurt is a former Graduate Program Director, Department Chair, and Senate Chair, and he has served as the Associate Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost for Academic Planning and Budget.

Seeking to improve environmental and health outcomes, Kurt’s research focused on conducting policy analysis in the concentrations of health and environmental economics. He has investigated marine resource policy and fishermen behavior, organ donation, hospital discharge protocols, pollution markets, and charitable auctions. In addition to his 50 peer reviewed publications and grant funding from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, National Marine Fisheries Service, and the United States Department of Agriculture, Kurt has received two teaching awards for excellence in the classroom and served on fishery advisory councils.

Kurt and his wife, Corinne, grew up in California. From their days as college athletes to their passionate pursuit of adventure and commitment to leading lives of purpose, they continue to enjoy the outdoors, spending vacation time in the High Sierras and the Rocky Mountains. They are avid sports fans, casual pet parents, and taco enthusiasts.
