Provost's Award for Undergraduate Research/Creative Mentoring
Chelsea Heveran
Chelsea Heveran, assistant professor of mechanical and industrial engineering in the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering, has won the Provost’s Award for Undergraduate Research and Mentoring. The criteria for the award include the number of undergraduate students mentored, hours of involvement, and recognition of student work through publication, awards, exhibitions, conference presentations and patents. This award carries a $2,000 honorarium.
Since she came to MSU in 2018, Heveran has directly mentored 21 undergraduate students, with six currently working in her lab. Brett Gunnink, dean of the college of engineering, estimates Heveran has spent 2,400 hours directly mentoring undergraduate researchers at MSU. Sixteen of the undergraduate students she mentored earned authorship on at least one manuscript, and five were the first author.
“In addition to her active mentorship of undergraduates in research, she has recently been focused on creating new undergraduate research programs at MSU that address specific gaps in programming,” Gunnink wrote in his letter nominating Heveran for the award. “Dr. Heveran’s contributions to undergraduate mentoring and creativity are noteworthy and very impactful. It will be worthy to recognize all her efforts and contributions with this award.”
Gunnink further praised Heveran’s work with students.
