The recipient of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development’s Award for Meritorious Technology and Science is Mike Giroux, head of the Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology in the College of Agriculture. This award recognizes a faculty member who has made significant technological or scientific contributions with the potential for transfer to the private sector. It carries a $2,500 honorarium.

Giroux’s research focuses on wheat genetics and breeding, and in his more than two decades at MSU, he has received numerous patents for genetic advancements focused on genes impacting grain quality and yield. He has also played a key role in the development and release of new durum varieties that are best suited to Montana’s climate and geography.

“Dr. Giroux has been integral to the economic success of Montana wheat and barley producers,” said Kent Kupfner, executive director of the Montana Wheat and Barley Committee, in a letter supporting Giroux’s nomination. “In particular, his contributions to durum wheat variety development should be recognized. Dr. Giroux’s work in gene discovery … has been an exciting development for growers and stands to improve their economic outcomes.”

In addition to amassing a prolific body of research and serving as department head since 2017, Giroux teaches advanced courses on plant breeding and genetics and plant biotechnology and has advised many undergraduate and graduate students on their own research projects.

“Mike is one of those faculty members who finds true joy in conducting research that positively impacts people,” said Sreekala Bajwa, MSU’s vice president for agriculture, in a nomination letter. “He also enjoys working with students and educating the next generation of plant science professionals. The current and potential future impact of his research in the wheat industry is tremendous.”
