Safety and Risk Management actively promotes a positive, responsible, and integrated safety culture throughout the University. Several programs support this promotion, which are listed below.

Automated External Defibrillators (AED)

AEDThe AED Program places Automated External Defibrillators (AED) on campus to provide quick access in the event of an emergency.

Chemical Safety

Chemical Safety Program provides information/assistance for compliance with the training, use, storage and disposal of chemicals. This includes laboratory, custodial, and other workplace settings.

E-Scrap

The E-Scrap Program keeps electronic devices from entering the landfills when there is a better and more appropriate route of disposal. Often times, items are reused, or stripped down for parts and recycling.

Fire & Life Safety

The Fire/Life Safety Program is directed at the safety and property conservation at MSU and sister campuses. The program includes fire prevention education, fire device inspections, system testing and staff/student trainings.

Hearing Conservation Program

The Hearing Conservation Program provides information/assistance for noise exposure assessment and control.

Occupational Health and Safety

Health and Safety is involved in the detection of unsafe or unhealthy working conditions, and in the identification and monitoring of occupational exposures to chemical and physical hazards. In addition, they provide work site health and safety inspections including but not necessarily limited to laboratories, service and agricultural work areas, and office environments. Health & Safety develops and performs health and safety training programs as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). These programs include, but are not limited to, a Hearing Conservation Program, Respiratory Protection, Blood borne Pathogen Standard, Occupational Medical Surveillance, Confined Space, Fall Protection and Personal Protective Equipment.

Ergonomics

Ergonomics is fitting the task to the worker. It is finding the best way to arrange workstations so the worker can perform his/her activities efficiently and safely. We work with you to create a safe working environment.

Respiratory Protection Program

Respirators are often used where particulates in the air are too plentiful to be innocuous. These devices require special attention to training, use, and monitoring to maintain a safe breathing environment for the user.

Medical Surveillance

The Medical Surveillance Program annually evaluates employee health and workplace risk factors, to ensure that the workplace is not adversely affecting employees' health and well being. Early detection of any changes in health is critical in providing prompt treatment and any associated medical care to address employee needs. Individuals that are at increased risk of acquiring illnesses due to working conditions are entered into this program.
