Frequently Asked Questions
- Any student who has attempted 12 or more college-level credits from a regionally accredited institution after graduating from high school is classified as a transfer student.
- Freshman and transfer students should submit all official transcripts/scores to MSU for evaluation.
- Please request official transcripts be sent directly from all institutions you have attended.
- Official transcripts must be requested and sent either by mail or by a secure electronic transcript service (Parchment, National Student Clearing house, etc.). Transcripts are NOT official if sent by email.

- Please note that all faxed or emailed out-of-state transcripts are considered unofficial. However, those faxed directly from another Montana University System in-state institution with a macro-fax stamp are accepted as official.
- Go to your Admissions Checklist by logging in to MyInfo.
- If you see a checkmark, we have received your final, official transcript.
- If you do not see a checkmark, we will still need your final, official transcript. We may have your transcript showing work in progress.
- Go to MyInfo.
- From the list, choose “Log into MyInfo”. Follow the Login Instructions.
- Click on the “Student Services” tab.
- Click on the “DegreeWorks” link. Here you will see how your transfer credits apply to the degree program you wish to pursue at MSU.
- Once you're admitted, the Office of Admissions will review your transcript for direct equivalents. If you have courses that do not transfer as direct equivalents, please contact the department and we will review them and make exceptions if necessary.

- If your department can’t make an exception, talk to your advisor about appealing the class.
- Your Academic Advisor will use DegreeWorks to help you select courses during university orientation.
- Questions about your transfer credit should be directed to your Admissions Evaluator, to your Academic Advisor, or to the department through which a possible equivalent course is offered. Only the Academic Advisors and departments are authorized to substitute transfer courses for curriculum requirements.
- If your department isn’t able to substitute in the class, talk to your advisor about appealing the class.
- At your orientation meeting, the department will talk about advising, and assign you a faculty advisor then.
- Your assigned advisor is listed in DegreeWorks. If you don't see one there, contact your department to have one assigned to you. Many advisors use Appointment Scheduler. Follow this link and search for your advisor to set up an appointment.
- If your advisor doesn't have appointments on Appointment Scheduler, you can email them by clicking on their name in DegreeWorks.
- The first time you register, you'll get your pin during orientation. After that, you'll have to meet with your advisor to receive your pin.
- If you are not a Montana resident, state government rules require the University to charge you the non-resident tuition and fees rate.
- You can apply to become a Montana legal resident if you follow the mandatory residency guidelines. If you have further questions about residency qualifications, contact the Office of Admissions (1-888-MSU-CATS).
