Computer Operating Systems
Maintain your Operating System.
October 4, 2021
Please do not upgrade to Windows 11 for PC at this time. UIT has not approved this
new OS for our network.
What happens if you don't perform routine maintenance on your car? Maybe your blinkers
stopped working or your headlights went out and now it's unsafe to drive. It's important
to maintain your car.
The same is true for maintaining your computer. Without keeping your operating system current, your computer is now susceptible to cybercrimes, malware, or even just running inefficiently, and now everyday tasks take longer.
Most updates to Windows, iOS, macOS, Android, and other operating systems contain security patches that protect you from emergent threats. Installing these updates as soon as possible protects you and your data from "bad guys" who are actively trying to exploit the vulnerabilities of older versions. Keeping your OS current will help you ensure the software has all the latest updates, and it is as secure as possible from known vulnerabilities.
UIT has processes to help ensure the security of your device and its data by automatically applying updates, but not without your help.
The good news is that if your MSU Owned device has the required Security Software, UIT automatically updates your Operating System.
Pro Tip: The required software is automatically added anytime you purchase a computer through UIT Purchasing.
Important note: Brand new operating systems (such as macOS Monterey to be released this Fall) often require testing to ensure that they work in our environment. UIT will communicate when these operating systems are okay to be installed and will be supported by UIT.
How can I help?
- Macs: Self Service-MacOS - UIT | Montana State University
- iPads: Check if the Self-Service app is on your home screen
- PCs: Press the Windows key and search for "Ivanti."
