OVERVIEW

MSU has installed the largest super computer in the state of Montana, a Research Computing Cluster called Hyalite composed of 1300 cores (2600 hyper-threaded) that together crank out 22 TeraFlops. 728 TB of high speed Lustre storage is attached to the cluster. Hyalite is supported by the Research Cyberinfrastructure (UIT). Hyalite has been expanded multiple times since it's initial installation in December 2014.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Hyalite is installed in 78U of rack space in the AJM data center.  The nodes were manufactured by Supermicro. They use Intel Xeon CPUs (36 Ivy Bridge EP, 24 Haswell, and 17 Broadwell). Each node has either 64 or 256 GB of RAM (with the exception of one node with 1500 GB RAM). Nodes are connected together with Mellanox 10 Gb Ethernet with RDMA. The SLURM Workload Manager is responsible for scheduling user jobs. The Lustre storage software is Intel Enterprise Lustre. Cluster provisioning and management is done with Bright Cluster Manager. Hyalite was financed by money from UIT, the Vice President for Research, and MSU faculty from Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Plant Sciences, and Ecology.
