This is a rove beetle, identified by its presence of short elytra (hardened forewings) that cover less than half of the abdomen. The diverse rove beetle group is currently believed to be the largest extant family of organisms with more than 63,000 described species and hundreds more added every year. Most rove beetles are 2-8 mm long.
