2021 MSU Faculty Symposium: Inspiring Excellence in Teaching and Learning

Please save the date to attend the 2021 MSU Faculty Symposium, hosted by the Center for Faculty Excellence. The goal of the Faculty Symposium is to feature exemplary practices in pedagogy, classroom technology, teaching innovations and the teaching-learning mindset furthered by our mutual understanding of faculty teaching practices, needs and opportunities as educators and to shape the future of instructional innovation on our campus.

This year we will discuss topics dealing with critically reflective teaching; inclusive teaching; teaching and mentoring graduate students; and what we have learned from blended teaching and learning. Please join us for faculty presentations, panel discussions, table talks and practical takeaways for your teaching practice.

Navigating the University and Expectations of an Academic Career

In this beginning session of the Early Career Faculty Success Learning Community, we will talk about Montana State University and how to navigate your academic career. The session includes pre-work – watching the webinar Every semester (term) needs a plan (free account with the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity required) – and a faculty panel session with department heads, non-tenure track and tenure-track faculty. We will also have an overview of the MSU Strategic Plan and how it applies to your MSU academic career.

Join this series of six workshops: Welcoming Tribal College student transfers and new students

Thursdays, Sept. 16, Sept. 30, Oct 14, Oct 28, Nov 4, Nov 18 || 3:00 to 4:30 pm || Room 108 Plant Biosciences Building

MSU will offer six workshops to welcome tribal college student transfers and new Native American students on Thursdays, September through November. The workshops will aim to prepare participants for successful, community-based participatory research, graduate and undergraduate student advising and classroom teaching. The workshops are offered collaboratively with administrators of Blackfeet Community College and other Amskapi Piikani Tribal members. This activity is open to all tribes as part of the New Beginnings for Tribal Students grant that is a cooperative effort with Blackfeet Community College in Browning, Browning Public Schools and Heart Butte Public Schools.

Improve Your Path to Success by Joining a Writing Group

Research has shown that daily writing, recording keeping, and accountability increases faculty productivity by a factor of nine or ten based upon the number of pages written or revised per year! Come to an information session on the model we use for writing groups and join a group. By attending the information session, you are not committed to joining a group, but you will be considered as being seriously interested.

Participating in a writing group means committing to writing at least 15 to 30 minutes a day, keeping a log of your writing, and meeting weekly with the group to share your results. The group will be expected to provide substantive input – this is not an editing group.

Intro to Grants and Finding Funding

New to writing grants? Join us for an interactive session that introduces you to the grant writing process, and the MSU policies and procedures. We will also cover how to find funding opportunities that fit your research program beyond searching on funding websites.

Online Teaching Square - share, learn about, and discuss online teaching practices - starts Sunday, Sept. 26th

Participate in an 8-week Online Teaching Square where you will observe and discuss the online courses and teaching practices of other online instructors from across various disciplines at MSU. See how other online instructors organize their online courses, engage students with online learning activities and assignments, present content online, communicate and interact with students, and design and facilitate online discussion boards.

Note that to be eligible to participate, you must be teaching an online course this fall semester during the teaching square timeframe of 9/26 to 11/20. Those who successfully complete the Online Teaching Square earn 4 credits towards the Certificate of Teaching Enhancement. It takes between 3-6 hours total to complete the Online Teaching Square.

New Workshop Series on Inclusive Pedagogy

Wednesdays, Sept. 29, Oct 27, Nov 10 || 1:00 to 2:30 pm || Reid Hall 124

Facilitator: Shihua Brazill, Instructional Designer, Center for Faculty Excellence

The purpose of the Inclusive Pedagogy workshop series is to engage faculty in creating a supportive learning environment that removes barriers for students. Participants will benefit from attending all three workshops but are not required to attend all of them. In Workshop 1 Inclusive Teaching, participants will learn about evidence-based inclusive teaching strategies. Together, we will discuss and implement specific strategies for creating inclusive learning environments that will support all learners. In Workshop 2 Universal Design for Learning, we will explore ways to incorporate UDL principles to design course instruction, materials, and content that engage all students and remove barriers to learning. In Workshop 3  Trauma Informed Pedagogy Panel, participants will learn from a faculty panel about how to implement trauma informed pedagogy into their teaching and interactions with students.

Publish and Flourish: Tips for Writing and Submitting Your Manuscript

September 29|| 11:00 am – 12:30 pm MST 

In this webinar, tips will be provided for how to organize your thoughts as you begin to write a manuscript. Ethical responsibilities of authorship, choice of a journal, and ways to overcome writer’s block will be discussed. Next, strategies for organizing material within the article, and stylistic aspects of each section of the paper, will be addressed. Finally, the manuscript submission process will be explained.

Join library faculty for the first of six workshops in our series, The MSU Library Revealed: A Learning Series for Faculty, to learn how the Library uses its materials budget to acquire print and electronic resources, and how different subscription models are changing the ways that libraries spend money. This session will discuss how the library makes purchasing and cancellation decisions, the rising cost of scholarly resources, and how the MSU Library is evolving its spending to meet the needs of its researchers and students.

Grant-Writing Bootcamp: From Idea to Proposal

APPLICATIONS DUE BY SEPTEMBER 10!

Go through the grant-writing process from beginning to end while working on your own grant proposal. With feedback from peers and experts, this 5-week workshop (over 6 weeks) is designed to help novice grant writers understand the requirements of a grant opportunity, collect and create the many parts of a proposal, organize and write about their project, connect with MSU resources, and submit a grant proposal at MSU.

MSU Learning Environment - Brightspace Training Opportunities

Are you new to the MSU Learning Environment Brightspace or would you like to learn more about how to use this tool? The ECAT Team is offering two trainings this fall:

Basics 1: The session will cover Brightspace login, My Home page, Course Homepage navigation and the Course Admin area. It will also include an explanation of how Banner and Brightspace work together, how course evaluations are delivered via Brightspace, details related to continuous delivery functionality and an overview of available support resources.

Basics 2: The session will detail common navigation features and related tool access/availability. Participants will learn common functionality related to:

  • How to create an announcement
  • HTML editor
  • Exploration of the content area
  • How to create modules and topics
  • Generating links
  • Understanding Learning Technologies integration

Participants will also be given a brief tour of the Manage Files area.

Sign-up for the Early Career Faculty Mentoring Program

The Early Career Mentor Program matches new faculty starting out in their careers with a network of mentors. Mentorship encompasses all aspects of what we do at Montana State University from understanding the goals and wishes of freshman undergraduate students to guiding graduate students through their academic journey to enabling the success of early career faculty in pursuing excellence in scholarship and teaching throughout faculty careers.

As part of this continuum, the CFE Mentoring Coordinators pair early career tenure and non-tenure track faculty with experienced faculty outside of the new faculty member’s college. Matches meet one-on-one two times during fall semester and three times in spring semester. Other meetings are at the discretion of the mentors and early career faculty. Several group meetings of mentees and mentors are scheduled on a variety of topics throughout the year.

ORCID Workshop for Researchers

Update your ORCID Record to Save Time and Get Credit in Funding Applications, Publications, and Research Reporting

Getting and using your free ORCID iD and ORCID record can help you save time and get credit for your work in funding, publishing, and research reporting workflows. Funding organizations, publishers, and research institutions are increasingly requiring or asking for ORCID iDs from researchers, so this workshop will help you make sure you are ahead of the game.

In this workshop, we will cover:

❖ An overview of the benefits of ORCID for researchers
❖ How ORCID can help you save time throughout the research landscape

❖ Tips and tricks for keeping your ORCID record up-to-date

The premise of the activity is rooted in one of the foundations of good logic which makes it a perfect and fun exercise for anybody that tends to be a bit more analytical or "left brained." It'll get people both thinking and laughing—in a room or on a Zoom.

Science Writing Workshop

Want to learn more about writing in the sciences? Joshua Schimel’s book Writing Science: How to write papers that get cited and proposals that get funded has become a go-to resource for writers across the sciences. This two-part workshop will explore the sections of Schimel’s book that focus on story structure and sentence-level choices, both of which will activate your writing and engage your readers. Between workshops, you will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with Writing Center tutors to apply these concepts to your own writing
