Montana State University has students from all 50 states and over 60 different countries. Meet the bobcats who come from the same communities as you and see why they chose to make MSU their new home away from home!

Lyla Brown| Salem, Connecticut

Major: Sociology - Criminology | Minor: Psychology & Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

Involvement:

Black Student Union co-founder and co-president, African Student Association member, Queer Straight Alliance member, Women’s Center volunteer, Associated Students of Montana State University (ASMSU) student staff, Diversity & Inclusion Student Commons (DISC) student staff-program coordinator, Orientation Leader, and former Resident Advisor.

What was your first impression of MSU?

It is so beautiful! I toured a bunch of different schools and fell in love with MSU because of the location and the staff that I encountered.

Why did you choose to attend MSU?

The small class sizes, proximity to what I want to focus on in my career and I love the town of Bozeman.

How was the transition from your home state to MSU and Bozeman? 

It was difficult for me! My transition here was made significantly smoother by my involvement with student clubs. I also really relied on my RA freshmen year and my professors.

What advice would you give your freshman self?

Go to class and try everything at least once. I do not like football, but I met my best friend there!

What did you do when you were homesick?

I called my family a lot, but the most beneficial thing for me was to get off campus and do something fun. There are tons of things to do in Bozeman, even if you do not have a car yourself.

Favorite campus activity or MSU tradition?

Homecoming parade and International Food Bazaar.

What is your favorite memory from your first year at MSU?

My favorite memory was from my first football game- Gold Rush. I stood next to a random person at the game and we became friends. We are still best friends today!

What advice do you have for a student coming from your state and out-of-state in general?

Get involved! There are lots of people that are coming to MSU with friends from high school, but there are also a ton that will not know anyone. It can be scary to put yourself out there, but it is the best thing to do.

Ian Crosbie | Montclair, New Jersey

Major: Business

What was your first impression of MSU?

I got off the plane saw the Bridgers and knew this was the school for me

Why did you choose to attend MSU?

The accessibility to skiing and the outdoors.

How was the transition from your home state to MSU and Bozeman? 

Easy, as Bozeman is a welcoming community and I had previously lived away from home.  

What is your favorite memory from your first year at MSU?

The first big powder day at Bridger.

What advice would you give your freshman self?

Engage more! There are so many cool clubs to join.

Were you able to go home during breaks/holidays or did you stay on campus?

I stayed for most breaks only went home for Christmas my freshman year, staying for the others let me go skiing and enjoy the outdoors.

What advice do you have for a student coming from your state and out-of-state in general?

Montana is a great state with many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Coming from the east coast I didn’t have this much access to the outdoors so take advantage of the outdoor rec and other stuff offered by the college.  

Brigid Johnston | Rockville, Maryland

Major: Chemical Engineering

Advocats, MSU Dance Marathon Executive Board, GX group fitness classes

What was your first impression of MSU?

The campus had a very relaxed atmosphere compared to some of the schools on the East Coast I had toured, and I was amazed by the view of the mountains.

Why did you choose to attend MSU?

I felt the MSU could give me the most well-rounded college experience. The professors I met are supportive and invested in their students’ successes, and the research labs are a great opportunity for undergraduates, but MSU also encourages interests outside of the classroom, such as skiing, music, or outdoor exploration.

What is your favorite memory from your first year at MSU?

My friends and I went on a weekend trip to Glacier National Park, and it was absolutely awe-inspiring.

What was the best ways you found to make friends? 

I moved in early to take part in Adventures MSU, which is where I met the beginnings of my core friend group. Clubs and the freshman seminar were also great ways to make friends.

What did you do when you were homesick?

I would make some family recipes and call my parents, but homesickness was a rarity.

Were you able to go home during breaks/holidays or did you stay on campus?

I stayed on campus for shorter holidays and even over summer break after my freshman year; Bozeman in the summer is a great place to be.

What advice do you have for a student coming from your state and out-of-state in general?

Learn the value of multiple layers of clothes and walk carefully when there’s ice.
