Opportunities
Prospective PhD Researchers
The Bio-Inspired Dynamics Laboratory, located in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at at Montana State University (MSU), is actively recruiting prospective PhD students to study the biomechanical principles governing insect flight. Flying insects are complex dynamical systems that boast an extraordinary ability to interact with their environments with minimal energetic costs and active control. Our team seeks to better understand the mechanics of the insect flight system in order to inform the design and optimization of bio-inspired technologies, such as flapping wing micro air vehicles and airfoil energy harvesting devices.
The successful candidate will receive a rigorous education in experimental and theoretical vibrations as well as bio-inspired design. Laboratory alumni will be competitive in aerospace, automotive or other industries where vibration engineering is prevalent, as well as in National Labs or academia. We are seeking for a candidate with following qualifications:
- BS or MS in Mechanical, biological, electrical or related field of engineering
- An analytical background in mathematics
- Understanding of MATLAB or other programming languages
- Experience with computational modeling software, such as finite element analysis
- Experience with experimental design, data collection and analysis
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Prior research experience, particularly in the area of dynamics and/or vibrations, is preferred
- Highly motivated and excited to work in a team
In addition to the excellent academic experience provided by MSU, a research active R1 institution, graduate students will enjoy the extraordinary outdoor opportunities Bozeman, Montana has to offer. We are situated 16 miles from Bridger Bowl ski resort and 43 miles to Big Sky ski resort, the second largest resort in the United States. Backpacking, hiking and mountain biking trails are located within minutes of the campus, and locals enjoy the world-class fishing, kayaking and other outdoor sports. Bozeman boasts a vibrant downtown with great restaurants, coffee shops, shopping and regular events, such as live music.
