The GSoC recognizes the importance of providing opportunities and resources for the K-12 community in Montana.  Our goal is to provide a venue with a variety of events, i.e. summer camps, and professional development opportunities that can enhance computing in the classroom and for K-12 teachers and students statewide.

Professional Development

Summer Courses for K-12 teachers

The GSoC and the Master of Science in Science Education (MSSE) at MSU teamed up to teach Computer Science in the Classroom: Computational Thinking for Teachers (also known as the Joy and Beauty of Computing or JBC) in 2014. The GSoC added a second course in 2016, the Joy and Beauty of Data (JBD), also for teachers, and has collaborated with the University of Montana and Montana Tech, through and NSF grant, to develop additional courses and offer the JBC course at all three campuses to reach more teachers in Montana.  The goal of the courses is to provide K-12 teachers with the tools to teach computing at their respective schools with the possibility of teaching the courses for dual-enrollment credit.

For information about the summer courses, please contact Sharlyn Izurieta, Demand Generation Coordinator at the GSoC, [email protected], or Diana Patterson, Associate Director, MSSE, [email protected].
