Steps to developing learning outcomes:
Start with the end in mind.
- Define "why" (why are we doing this) before "what" (what are we
doing)
Structure/Formatting the statement
SWiBAT Format:

"Student(s) will be able to... "
- Students will be able to do ___________ (verb), ___________(demonstrated learning) (criterion), as a result of ___________ (program/service).
ABCD Format:
- A – audience, B – behavior, C – condition, D - degree
- Audience – usually students or a group of students. Be as specific as possible. (i.e. pell eligible, first generation, freshman)
- Behavior – what is the audience expected to do as a result of the intervention.
- Condition – the program or intervention that foster’s the behavior.
- Behavior – provides the threshold to determine if the outcome is achieved.
- Formula: Condition, Audience, Behavior, Degree
Use action verbs
- Terms such as know, understand, learn, appreciate are generally not specific enough to be measurable
- Consider the level of learning you want students to achieve
- Use Bloom's to select an action verb
