About the College
Providing an inclusive, hands-on learning environment is the core mission of the Norm
Asbjornson College of Engineering. Whether working alongside faculty on world-class
research or partnering with local high-tech businesses for the senior capstone project,
students gain valuable experience that prepares them for in-demand jobs. With a makerspace
and innovative classrooms in Norm Asbjornson Hall, MSU is invested in the next generation
of creative problem-solvers.
Facts & Stats
- Over 90% of our students who graduate from the College of Engineering are employed within 6 months of graduation and have employment opportunities with companies such as Boeing, Micron, 3M, NASA, IM Flash Technologies, Oracle, Verizon and more.
- Research expenditures for the College of Engineering exceeded $15 million in 2018. These projects include biofilm research to improve the treatment of chronic wounds, making biofilm out of a fungus found in South America, manufacturing snow in our Subzero Research Laboratory, studying the infrastructure of avalanches to help improve the understanding and predictions of avalanches and much more.
- Our College of Engineering features state of the art research entities, including our Center for Biofilm Engineering, Magnetic Resonance Laboratory, Subzero Research Laboratory and many more on campus. These research centers are some of the world’s leading research centers - all on our campus!
- The College of Engineering is involved in a variety of outreach programs, including organizations such as Empower, which promotes the success of underrepresented minorities in engineering and other science-related areas of study. Women in Engineering is another phenomenal organization on campus and is dedicated to creating a welcoming community of women engineers and computer scientists by providing networking, leadership and personal and professional development opportunities. We are also home to TEAMS, which is a program that provides workshops and resources to help Montana teachers enhance their math and science curricula. MSU hosts many other engineering outreach programs, such as FIRST Robotics, Engineer-A-Thon and Shadow an Engineer.
- Our engineering students are passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE exam), a national licensing exam for engineering students, around 90% on their first try. The national average is about 75%.
