The College of Letters & Science is the largest center for learning, teaching and research at Montana State University.

Offering more than 50 majors and 25 minors, this college teaches students to think critically, solve problems, communicate clearly, understand various disciplines and cultures and develop the engagement that will make them life-long learners and leaders. Many of our faculty members are well known nationally and internationally for their contributions to their field. Faculty members in the College of Letters & Science have an impressive record for winning highly competitive national grants to support research and scholarship, with over $22 million in research grants last year.

About the College

Develop a deep understanding of the past — and the world we live in now — in social sciences and humanities in the College of Letters & Science.

The college provides exciting opportunities for students at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary inquiry. L&S students achieve at the highest levels and are frequent recipients of some of the country’s top awards, including Truman Scholarships, Gates-Cambridge and Schwarzman Scholarships and the Rhodes Scholarship.

Uncover Yellowstone’s mysteries or discover the make-up of aquatic ecosystems in Montana’s rivers and streams. Dig dinosaur fossils and explore mountain formations alongside world-class researchers. Study the natural sciences in our high-tech campus labs and in the expansive
natural lab space surrounding us.

  • The 15 different departments within the College of Letters and Science represent the four areas of the humanities, natural sciences, mathematics and social sciences. These departments share a commitment to helping students think critically and solve problems, communicate clearly, understand various disciplines and cultures and develop the engagement that will make them life-long learners and leaders. 
  • Faculty members are well-known for their contributions to their fields, and have an impressive record for winning competitive national grants to support research and scholarships. Students will benefit from numerous opportunities to work side-by-side with faculty on original research and scholarship, an experience that is elsewhere often available only to graduate students. 
  • The students within this college are regularly recognized with national science awards, including the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for excellence in math and science, the Udall Scholarship for students intending to pursue careers related to the environment, the Truman Scholarship for leadership and public service, the Boren Scholarship for international study and the Rhodes Scholarship, which is arguably the most prestigious scholarship in the world.
