Improving Transition Through Technology Transfer
From 2000 to 2021, 39% of patent license agreements resulted in transition, amounting to over $5 billion in sales of new products and services to the US military. These figures highlight substantial opportunities to further increase technology transition through T2 mechanisms and better leverage the research conducted by federal labs to benefit the warfighter.
The Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OASD (R&E)) commissioned a study on ways to enhance Technology Transition of lab technology to the DOD.

Insulated Beverage Container Technology Viability Assessment
A Technology Viability Assessment (TVA) provides a concise picture of the technical and commercial viability of a technology, steps necessary to commercialize a technology, and recommendations, to help drive investment decisions.
The assessment includes Competition, Market Opportunities, Licensing Intelligence and Potential, Technology Readiness Levels for Hardware and/or Software, and Manufacturing Readiness Level.

Federally funded research centers and federal laboratories conduct billions of dollars’ worth of research and development annually on behalf of the US Government. Technology transfer offices (TTOs) facilitate these relationships with private sector partners. This study identifies private sector's motivations and key drivers for licensing federal technology.
